Chapter Nineteen

Mikey squirmed as Bennett wheeled her sister toward her and Marjorie. Her mouth suddenly dry, Mikey told herself again that she was doing the right thing. Margaret knew things, and Mikey needed to find out what they were, no matter what Rem or Mason said. Thinking of Rem again and their dreadful argument, she forced back her tears. Angry at herself for listening to him and not to herself when he didn’t even love her, made her want to punch something. Just as strong, though, were her hurt feelings. What he’d said about Jennie had pierced her heart. Once Rem had gone upstairs after telling her he wanted to sleep alone, she’d sobbed while packing and, after writing the note, she’d left with Chester and gone to Mason’s.

She’d told Mason little about the argument, only that she needed sleep and time alone. Tossing and turning though, she’d decided that morning to see Margaret. She’d called Marjorie, only intending to vent and not for her friend to join her, but now that the moment was here, Mikey gave thanks she wasn’t alone.

As the wheelchair approached, Mikey tried to relax. She took a long, calming breath and focused. Margaret looked much the same as the last time Mikey had seen her, only subdued. Her black hair ran down her back, and her piercing gaze connected with Mikey’s. Mikey caught the almost imperceptible shift in energy when her intuitive side kicked in, and she realized her sister understood exactly where she was and who she was talking to.

Bennett stopped the chair in front of the couch. He lifted a tray from the side near the armrest and raised it in front of Margaret. “You have visitors today, Margaret. Your sister and her friend. Isn’t that nice?”

Margaret’s gaze moved to Marjorie.

Bennett pulled something from a bag on the back of the wheelchair. “Here are some crayons and paper.” He set three crayons — a red, green, and blue one — on the tray along with a loose-leaf piece of paper. “You can draw if you want.” He looked at Mikey and Marjorie. “She’s having a good day today. She’s sedated but might be open to talking.” He eyed Margaret. “I’ll be nearby if you need anything, Margaret.” He spoke to Mikey. “I’ll be just down the hall.” He set the brake on the wheelchair and stepped away.

Mikey stared at her sister, and Marjorie didn’t say a word.

Margaret watched them both with almost no expression, but her eyes sparkled. She didn’t touch the crayons.

Mikey interlaced her fingers. “Hi, Margaret,” she said, trying to hide her nerves.

Margaret didn’t even blink.

“How are you?” asked Mikey, feeling that was a stupid question. “I hope you don’t mind a visit from me.”

Margaret continued to stare.

Mikey wrung her hands. Realizing what she was doing, she laid them in her lap. “I won’t stay long. I just need to ask you about that night. At the grove.”

Margaret’s eyes widened slightly.

“Who was the man with you? The one smoking the cigarette?”

Margaret’s eyes flicked to Marjorie, and she picked up the red crayon.
